LANDMARK LA BUILDINGS GO BLUE

FOR NATIONAL PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

PCF and Blue September Initiate Blue Campaign

to Raise Awareness Among Angelenos

SANTA MONICA, CA/September 1, 2011?Major Los Angeles landmarks, including LA?s iconic City Hall, are turning blue during the week of Sept. 12 to raise awareness for prostate cancer. The disease is a major American health problem that has long been misunderstood, and too little spoken of, among men and their families.

?Prostate cancer is to men what breast cancer is to women, yet open dialogue of the disease lags behind other cancers,? says Dan Zenka, senior vice president of communication at the Los Angeles-based Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF). Ironically, Zenka was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer two years after he began working at PCF. ?We are grateful to the City of Los Angeles, Downtown Santa Monica, Inc., local property owners and Blue September for their support in this effort. It is our hope that Angelenos will see more blue every September moving forward.?

This year, more than 240,000 new cases of prostate cancer are projected to be diagnosed in the U.S. and more than 33,000 American will die as a result. Worldwide, more than 16 million men and their families are challenged by prostate cancer.

Landmark buildings turning blue this September include:

  • Capitol Records (Sept. 16-18)
  • Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows Santa Monica (Sept. 12-18)
  • Los Angeles City Hall (Sept. 16-18)
  • Prostate Cancer Foundation (Sept. 12-18)
  • Pylons at LAX (the light towers) (Sept. 14-17)
  • Ferris wheel at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier (Sept. 16-18)
  • The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (Sept. 16-18)
  • 5900 Wilshire, A Development of The Ratkovich Company (Sept. 16-18)
  • 2nd and 4th Streets in Downtown Santa Monica (Sept. 12-18)

Retailers and businesses distributing materials to customers and employees include:

  • Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. (continuous throughout Sept.)
  • Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows Santa Monica (Sept. 12-18)
  • Fred Segal Santa Monica (Sept. 12-18)
  • The City of Los Angeles (Sept. 16)
  • Viceroy Santa Monica (Sept. 16-18)

The Los Angeles City Council will issue a proclamation in support of prostate cancer awareness during its Sept. 16 Council meeting.

The September campaign represents a partnership with PCF and Blue September, an organization designed to educate American men about prostate cancer and encourage routine screenings. The Prostate Cancer Foundation is the beneficiary organization of the Blue September California campaign. All dollars raised for PCF will fund advanced prostate cancer research.

?As the world?s largest private funder of prostate cancer research, we are compelled to educate our Los Angeles neighbors on a disease that currently affects more than two million American men and their families,? said Jonathan W. Simons, MD, president and CEO of PCF. ?With Los Angeles turning blue, we are prompting conversations that could save a man?s life.?

?There is still time to go blue. It is our hope that as other building owners hear about this effort, they too will join the campaign and support this important cause,? adds Zenka. Beyond turning buildings blue this September, there are additional opportunities for Los Angeles partners to join the campaign, which can be found at www.blueallover.org.
