Dogs in Dorms - Pet Tails

Some students aren't choosing colleges for their academic rating, diverse majors, or the sports programs. Instead many college bound students think the most important criteria their future alma mater can offer is room in the dorm for their dog. Ever since Elle Wood (Reese Witherspoon in "Legally Blonde") marched into her dormitory at Harvard Law School carrying her dog Bruiser, college students are repeating this scene at dorms all over the United States. At more and more colleges, in addition to dorm sized fridges, bean bag chairs, and the latest laptops, college students are arriving with their roommate of choice on the end of a leash and these four-legged roommates are welcome.

Pets in college dorms are nothing new. Fish tanks, gerbils, iguanas, and other small animas that are contained in cages have been part of the decor in college dorms for decades. Cats were FURtive roommates as long as they remained undiscovered by the dorm resident advisors and unreported by other students who disapproved. Dogs were slower to be accepted into American colleges. Vassar was the trendsetter in allowing students to bring their dogs along to college. After discovering some students kept dogs in their dorm rooms despite rules banning it, Vassar developed what is perhaps the first policy for dogs to take up residence on campus. The policy allows dogs and other pets in dormitories where 75 percent of the residents agree to their presence.
