Documents from the US State Department, made public by WikiLeaks, show that Cardinal Bernard Law has engaged in diplomatic work for the Vatican in Vietnam, seeking to improve relations between the government and the Catholic Church.
The former Archbishop of Boston traveled to Vietnam in 2009, to help confirm a meeting later that year between Pope Benedict XVI and Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet, the WikiLeaks documents show. He also helped to negotiate the early resignation of Archbishop Ngo Quang Kiet of Hanoi, whose removal the Vietnamese government had demanded.
Cardinal Law resigned his place as Archbishop of Boston in 2002 after coming under intense criticism for his mishandling of the sex-abuse crisis, and was later appointed archpriest of the Roman basilica of St. Mary Major.
