Common Misconceptions about Mesothelioma Lung Cancer

Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common occurrence of the cancer where the disease begins from the lining of the lungs. This disease is most commonly associated by people who are exposed to varying amounts of asbestos during their daily routine mostly at work. Because this is a rare disease, there are many misconceptions about it including causes as well as treatment.

A common misconception about the disease is that only those who are exposed to asbestos run the risk of contracting the disease. It is true that most of the patients but not all of them that are suffering from the disease have been exposed to asbestos. There have been several reports of family members and friends of people who work around asbestos that have contracted the disease. Indirect contact with asbestos is as dangerous as direct contact.
However, there is a minority that contracted the disease due to various other factors which include genetic factors that render some people more susceptible to the disease than others. Others get it because they have been exposed to simian virus 40 while others contract the disease due to exposure to radiation.

Another common misconception about the Mesothelioma lung cancer form is that it only affects smokers. This is not true because the disease has also been contracted by people who do not smoke at all. however, smoking will increase the body?s vulnerability to the disease as well as exaggerating the effects of the disease on the person.

Another misconception is that asbestos only affects the lungs of the sick individual. As mentioned earlier, pleural Mesothelioma is the most common type that is manifested in people but there are other types of the disease. Peritoneal Mesothelioma affects the layer around the stomach and pericardial Mesothelioma predominantly destroys the pericardial covering of the heart. The least common form of the disease is the Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis which affects the lining that protects the scrotum as well as the testes.
