With new releases like the dual-clutch and ABS-equipped NC700X, Honda can hardly be accused of fearing the future... which makes it all the more endearing when they play up the past.

Just announced for the U.S. market is a retro treatment of the old school Honda CB naked bike, which defined the "Universal Japananese Motorcycle" aesthetic with their visible engine components and spare construction. The new ride doesn't stray far from the paradigm, with an 1,140cc air and oil-cooled inline-4 cylinder engine routing exhaust into a single chromed pipe. Not coincidentally, the 31.3-inch saddle height is beginner friendly, and its back-to basics design just begs for a caf? racer treatment; as much as we love the CB1100 for its mechanical honesty, we'd also love to attach a set of clip-on handlebars, add a bikini fairing, and lighten up that bulky exhaust pipe.?

A brief CB1100 preview ride along the California coast revealed predictable user friendliness, an upright riding position, and ample-- but not quite arm-stretching-- power from the smooth-revving mill. Its starting price of $9,999 seems right on target with the bike's down-to-earth capabilities, and an ABS-equipped version will be available for $10,999 when the bike hits US showrooms in March, 2013.
