Gary Chartrand named chairman of Florida Board of Education

Jacksonville businessman Gary Chartrand was named chairman of the state Board of Education on Friday.

The board voted unanimously to appoint Chartrand. He succeeds Kathleen Shanahan, whose term on the board expires in 18 months. Originally appointed to the board in May 2011 by Gov. Rick Scott, he will assume the chairman duties immediately.

?We are pleased that someone from Jacksonville was elected as Chair of the State Board of Education. Mr. Chartrand has a broad understanding of the efforts, progress and challenges of school districts, not only in Duval County, but in a number of districts throughout the state,? Duval Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals said.
