Last week?s meeting of the HR Policy Group showed that though Poland?s economic growth is slowing down, there are still twice as many employers looking to recruit new employees as those looking to slim their workforce.
If there?s one area that leads the way in terms of creating new jobs ?in Poland, it?s business process outsourcing/shared services centres (BPO/SSC for short). As economic conditions in western Europe continue to show little signs of improvement, so large corporations seek further cost-cutting measures. And moving those back office activities ? invoicing, payroll, HR, accountancy ? into one centre in a lower-cost economy and from there to provide those services for all operations across Europe (and indeed the world) ? makes perfect sense.
The number of new BPO/SSC players in Poland keeps on growing. What they?re all looking for ? other than lower wages ? is a well-educated and highly motivated young labour force. Poland?s university towns are good places to set up new BPO/SSC operations. Poland?s young graduates offer great language skills ? not just English.
Which one, though? With the first-wave investments in this sector focused on cities like Krak?w, Wroc?aw (and more recently) Tri-City, there is a feeling on the market that skill shortages are pushing up labour costs. But this tendency has not put off investors. WNS, an Indian company with UK roots, opened a BPO centre in the Tri-City last year, from which it will service its German, Scandinavian and Russian clients. Bayer and Intel have just announced the opening of shared services centres, also in the Tri-City.
We expect to see more interest in this rapidly growing sector ? with university towns like Lublin, Radom and Toru? also being taken into consideration.
