INDIANAPOLIS- The Oakland women's golf team and women's basketball team were presented with the NCAA Public Recognition Award, the NCAA announced on Thursday. The award is given to programs with a multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent in the nation for their sport.
The awards for 2012 were based on the 2010-11 multi-year APR and represent the continued dedication of these teams to the Oakland mission of producing graduates and champions. The top scores this year ranged from 978 to a perfect score of 1000.
Oakland has earned the honor five times in school history, but this is the first time that two teams have been recognized in the same year. It is the third time that the women's golf team has claimed the honor, while it is the first occasion for women's basketball. The men's cross country team also earned the distinction in 2006.
Both teams will receive a congratulatory letter of recognition from the NCAA.
