Apple's new smartphone may not be numbered 5, but it's still selling like hot cakes
When Apple showed its cards at the recent iPhone event, many were slightly puzzled ? and even downright upset ? that an all-new smartphone wasn't poised for release. Fans cried foul and social networks were riddled with less-than-enthusiastic reactions. But despite sporting a nearly identical outward appearance, the iPhone 4S made it into the hands of over 4 million people in just its first three days on the market.
Though it may look the same, the iPhone 4S is a considerable upgrade from the standard iPhone 4. The 4S features a superior camera and antenna, as well as a beefy dual-core processor that promises lightning-fast response times when using apps or performing other common smartphone tasks. Add to that the uber-cool Siri virtual assistant and you've got a phone that millions of people can't wait to purchase.
The huge sales figures of the iPhone 4S launch absolutely crush past iPhone debuts, but there are other factors at play besides the handset's undeniable cool factor. When the iPhone 4 launched, it was only available on AT&T, but when the 4S became available on October 14, it was able to draw sales from AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. This undoubtedly helped Apple reach the lofty 4 million sales milestone, and ensures that whenever the iPhone 5 does arrive, there will be plenty of people in line.
