Imagery of Town in Fukushima Exclusion Zone on Google Street View

Google has made it possible to explore Japan`s nuclear exclusion zone through its street view initiative. ?Two years after the earthquake and the tsunami that lead to a nuclear meltdown in the Fukushima Number 1 Nuclear plant and consequently, to thousands of north Japan residents fleeing their homes,?it is now possible to experience the area of abandonment through published images of the devastation in the small Japanese town of Namie.

Google started filming and taking photos in Namie when they were invited by its mayor, Tamotsu Baba. 21,000 residents are still not allowed to reenter the city, but they can access Street View imagery of their town on Google Maps.

Most of the images captured by Google were collapsed buildings and wrecked fishing boats washed ashore. Mayor Tamotsu Baba gave Google permission to take photos to give locals and people abroad a look at the damages left by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear radiation. According to some reports, those from areas closest to the nuclear site may have to wait decades before their communities are safe to live in again.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Namie recently, announcing a plan this summer for the return of the residents to some areas of the evacuation zone. The Prime Minister is also expected to offer a timeframe for the completion of the reconstruction of the neighborhood.

Panoramic images of the town are available on Google Maps, Google Earth and the Memories for the Future site, which has already published before and after images of communities hit by the disasters.

How 'Disease' Label in Kids Affects Treatment

Once a child's behavior is labeled as a "disease," parents are more willing to use medications to treat their child, even if they are told the medications aren't effective, a new study suggests.

In the study, 175 parents of healthy 1-month-old infants at a clinic in Michigan were asked to imagine that their baby was spitting up and crying frequently. Parents then imagined that took their infant to a doctor, and some were told that the doctor said the child had gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), while others were told the doctor did not diagnose a specific disease.

Parents who were told their child had GERD were interested in treating their infant with medications, even when they were told the medications probably wouldn't help improve the child's symptoms. In contrast, parents who weren't given a disease label by a doctor were not interested in using the medications if they were told the medications were not effective.

While many young children cry and spit up excessively, few actually have GERD, a condition that can only be confirmed when doctors use an instrument called an endoscope to look down a child's throat. However, many doctors unnecessarily diagnose GERD when a child exhibits these normal behaviors, and prescribe unnecessary treatments, the researchers said. Between 1999 and 2004, there was a sevenfold increase in the use of medications to treat GERD, the researchers said.

"Doctors may inadvertently encourage the use of questionable medical interventions and foster medicalization of minor pediatric illnesses by using labels that increase patients? perceived need for treatment," the researchers write in the April 1 issue of the journal Pediatrics.

In a commentary accompanying the study, Dr. William Carey, of the Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia, said: "This is compelling evidence that the choice of words by physicians can significantly affect parents' views of their children?s health."

"This paper should reinforce the need to focus attention on pediatric pathogenesis, and strengthen efforts to reduce it," Carey said. The way doctors identify and deal with perhaps annoying yet normal children's behavior, and how doctors discuss children's health with parents "makes a big difference in the quality of care," ?he added.

Pass it on: Labeling a child's behavior as a "disease" without proper diagnosis may increase unnecessary treatment in children.

Cyprus Church leader promises help amid crisis

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) -- The leader of Cyprus' Orthodox Christian church vowed to do all he can so that ordinary people "won't go hungry" amid the country's worst financial crisis in decades.

Archbishop Chrysostomos II said the church's property belongs to the people, but "dignity" prevents them from asking for help. He said he has instructed parish priests to discreetly seek out those in need.

Chrysostomos said after Sunday's liturgy that the church would help create jobs "so that smiles can return to our people's faces again."

Cyprus' jobless rate now stands at 15 percent, but economists fear a significant spike in the months ahead following a financial rescue agreement with the country's eurozone partners and the International Monetary Fund that has decimated the troubled banking sector and choked businesses.

Two die in China from bird flu strain not previously seen in humans: Xinhua

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Two people in Shanghai, one of China's largest cities, died this month after contracting a strain of avian influenza that had never been passed to humans before, the official Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday.

The two men, aged 87 and 27, became sick late February and died in early March. Another woman in nearby Anhui province also contracted the virus in early March and is in a critical condition, Xinhua said, quoting the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC).

The strain of the bird flu virus found in all three people was identified as H7N9, which had not been transmitted to humans before, the commission said.

The three cases were confirmed to be human infection of the H7N9 strain by experts from the NHFPC, based on clinical observation, laboratory tests and epidemiological surveys, Xinhua said.

All three cases showed symptoms of fever and coughs that later developed into pneumonia.

Calls to the NHFPC on Sunday were not answered.

It is unclear how the three victims were infected. The virus does not seem highly contagious because no health abnormalities were detected among 88 of the victims' close contacts, Xinhua quoted the commission as saying.

There are no known vaccines against the H7N9 virus.

APNewsBreak: Gas trade group seeks fracking probe

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? A formal complaint filed with New York's lobbying board asks it to investigate whether Artists Against Fracking, a group that includes Yoko Ono and other A-List celebrities, is violating the state's lobbying law, according to the document obtained by The Associated Press.

The Independent Oil & Gas Association, an industry group that supports gas drilling, filed the complaint Tuesday with the state's Joint Commission on Public Ethics.

The complaint is based on an AP story that found that Artists Against Fracking and its members, including Ono, her son Sean Lennon, actors Mark Ruffalo and Robert De Niro and others, aren't registered as lobbyists and therefore didn't disclose their spending in opposition to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to remove gas from underground deposits.

"The public has been unable to learn how much money is being spent on this effort, what it is being spent on, and who is funding the effort," said Brad Gill, executive director of the Independent Oil & Gas Association of New York. "I understand the power of celebrity that this organization has brought to the public discussion over natural gas development, but I do not understand why this organization is not being required to follow the state's lobbying law."

The group confirmed it filed the complaint but didn't comment further.

Artists Against Fracking, formed by Ono and Lennon, says its activities are protected as free speech. The group was created last year amid the Cuomo administration's review to determine whether to allow hydraulic fracturing to remove gas from vast underground shale formations in southern and central New York.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo continues his review as public opinion has shifted from initial support based on the promise of jobs and tax revenue from drilling in economically depressed upstate New York to mixed feelings because of concerns over potential environmental and health effects.

Seven months after Artists Against Fracking was formed, the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute on March 20 found that New York voters were for the first time opposed to fracking, 46 percent to 39 percent.

"There's no doubt the celebrities had an effect," Quinnipiac pollster Maurice Carroll said. "As far as I can tell, they made all the difference."

A spokesman for Artists Against Fracking said the group and its individual members don't have to register as lobbyists.

"As private citizens, Yoko and Sean are not required to register as lobbyists when they use their own money to express an opinion and there's also no lobbying requirement when you are engaged in a public comment period by a state agency," spokesman David Fenton said.

"If the situation changes then, of course, Artists Against Fracking will consider registering," Fenton said. "Up to now, there has been no violation because they are entitled to do this as private citizens with their own money."

On its website, the group implores readers: "Tell Governor Cuomo: Don't Frack New York." Celebrities supporting the group have led rallies and performed in the song "Don't Frack My Mother," also carried on the Internet.

Ethics commission spokesman John Milgrim didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday. By law, the commission doesn't confirm or deny pending investigations.

New York's former lobbying regulator, attorney David Grandeau, said he believed the group and the supporting artists, including musicians Paul McCartney and Lady Gaga and actress Anne Hathaway, should be registered and required to disclose details on their efforts to spur public opposition to gas drilling.

"When you are advocating for the passage or defeat of legislation or proposed legislation and spend more than $5,000, you are required to register," Grandeau said Friday. "Just because you are a celebrity doesn't mean that lobbing laws don't apply to you. Your celebrity status does not protect you in Albany."

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and developer Donald Trump are among the high-profile figures who clashed with the commission when Grandeau was regulator. The biggest penalty for failure to follow the lobbying law resulted in a $250,000 fine against Trump and others over casinos in 2000.
