Steve Jobs And Bill Gates Quotes - Business Insider

Earlier this month, Bill Gates got emotional talking about Steve Jobs.

"He and I, in a sense, grew up together," Gates said. "We were within a year of the same age, and we were kind of naively optimistic and built big companies. And every fantasy we had about creating products and learning new things ? we achieved all of it. And most of it as rivals. But we always retained a certain respect and communication, including even when he was sick."

There's no relationship in history like that of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

As partners and rivals, they built the personal computing industry with two totally different styles.

Jobs was a working-class kid from California who believed in tight control over all products, and put a premium on design.

Bill Gates was an upper class kid from Washington who believed in open products, and didn't worry too much about great design.

"Each one thought he was smarter than the other one, but Steve generally treated Bill as someone who was slightly inferior, especially in matters of taste and style," said early Macintosh employee Andy Hertzfield in Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs bio. He added, "Bill looked down on Steve because he couldn?t actually program."

Gates quote inspired us to take a look back at some of the best quotes from Gates and Jobs about each other in Isaacson's book to get a deeper sense of what the men really thought of each other.

Gen Journey: Family Tree at FamilySearch

I've been doing what I do best - procrastinating! ?I have been meaning to write a post on FamilySearch's new Family Tree. ?It may sound a little strange, but I have often wondered what is going to happen with all the research I have undertaken over the last 20 years. ?OK, maybe research is too lofty a word to use to describe some of the activities I have done, but, none the less, it was research to me.

Really, have you ever thought of what might happen to your research? ?I do not have family members that find family tree research even remotely interesting. ?My guess is that all of those piles of papers that I worked so hard to collect will probably be in the trash before my body is cold. ?Perhaps the photos will be kept, but how many times have you gone into an antique store or flea market and found family photos and documents for sale?

To hedge my bet, I posted my family tree at Rootsweb and at Ancestry. ?Rootsweb has proven its ability to survive, but I'm not so sure just how long it will be viable. ?Ancestry has the ability to post all kinds of supporting reference material to my tree. ?My question though, is how long will this information be available after my account goes delinquent? ?I could see the delete button erasing any trace of my years and years of hard work. ?Poof! ?Here today, gone tomorrow.

Enter our friends at FamilySearch. ?I think I may now have at least a chance to provide a depository for my research. ?I created my free account and started a family tree. ?

My tree project is serving two purposes. ?I am using this exercise to re-enter my information from scratch. ?It really has been an eye-opener for me. ?All the information I am adding must have a verifiable source attached to it. ?The convenience of linking sources directly from the FamilySearch database with a few simple mouse clicks makes this process easy. ?The eye-opener part is in reviewing the records I am attaching.

I am retracing research I did, in some cases, twenty years ago. ?My skills as a genealogist have improved over the years and things I missed, or connections I could have made, are far more apparent. ?Additionally, I am in no hurry to build my tree. ?I have been slowly combing the records and building solid family groups. ?I have also started using the 'discussion' tab in my family tree to record stories and add personal knowledge for the individuals on my tree.

The second purpose this project is serving is in the area of photographs. ?FamilySearch is allowing each individual account to upload as many as 5,000 photographs. ?I have become the repository of my family's photos and have been worried what will happen to them when I am gone. ?Now I can attach these photos to the family members in my tree. ?The original photographs may eventually be scattered to the winds, but I can rest easy that at least digital copies will be attached to a biographical record of my family.

Has anyone else thought of ways to secure your 'genealogical legacy'? ? ? ?

Video Marketing Can Be Easy With Our Help

Video Marketing Can Be Easy With Our Help

You know how important promotion is to the success of your business. Maybe your traditional media marketing is failing. That said, video marketing may prove more effective than any of those other methods for certain types of businesses. Keep reading to learn the right way to use video marketing to get new customers.

Don?t be afraid of complex video marketing strategies. Creating quality videos is easy as long as you have a camera and a good tripod. Demonstrate to your viewers the production and design processes that go into the finished product, or explain more about your organization and its values.

If you use YouTube, use its editing features. For example, you have the option to add annotations throughout your videos. This makes it easy to share additional information such as a link or a coupon code.

TIP! If you make more videos, the better it is for you. Posting new videos all the time will draw people to your site to see what new stuff you put up.

Realize that making your marketing video is just the first part of your video marketing strategy. Getting lots of viewers is all about how you promote your videos. If you market your videos well enough, you can get a 900% increase in your subscriber base in a relatively short time. Good content is only useful it people know it exists.

An excellent method of creating video content is working collaboratively with others. Don?t overlook the skills of your friends and family in your search. However, you should ensure you credit these people in your videos so that they have the chance to be acknowledged.

Don?t stray from your topic. Prepare yourself so you do not wander off topic. Create a video outline, and stick to it. By staying on topic, your videos will be more concise.

TIP! If your marketing video is more than 20 minutes in duration, you might run into problems. During a product demonstration, for example, you may want to use this much time to fully explore all the features of the product.

If your videos are about a product you sell, make sure to include a link in the video description. Try to include the link inside the video player. Thus, your link stays put even if your video is shared or ends up someplace else.

Interesting content is king. Business videos can be interesting, fun, or newsworthy. You may be able to boost your views with a video hosting site, but it won?t really work out if you have boring videos. The days of long, dull informercials is long gone. People now have higher standards for video content. A good video, along with good marketing, can mean great success.

Always include a question in each video. This is commonly referred to as a ?call to action?. For instance, if you would like viewers to subscribe to your newsletter, guide them to a link you?ve given them in the description of the video. In order for this to work, you must make it as simple as possible.

TIP! Within the video, add a screenshot depicting your website. Viewers will be able to see your site?s setup this way.

Analytics are key to video marketing. You can tell so many different things from the statistics that are provided. You can find out a lot from this data.

Don?t do everything yourself. It can be very hard to brainstorm by yourself for a video. Do some brainstorming sessions with friends, staff and colleagues to get an idea list you can concentrate on. Have sessions such as these on a regular basis to make sure that you remain abreast of advertising and what is happening in your niche.

Your videos can also promote the rest of your marketing mix. This lets anyone who sees your video know about all the online properties you run. You can drive traffic to other sites you own by promoting them within the video. When all of your social sites are linked in to your video site, you will drive your traffic and sales higher.

TIP! Remember how important an catchy title is to the success of your video. The title should reach out and grab your viewers? attention, enticing them to view the clip.

You should never end the video without giving them an action call. Inform your viewers on how to find your services or products. Be clear and concise so your viewers know exactly how to obtain the product they saw in the video. The best way to end your video is by delivering a powerful message about what action they need to take.

You should post your video on any site you own, in addition to posting it elsewhere. This gives you greater control. You can include links around the video that are related to the content. You will not lose views since the analytical tools made accessible to YouTube users keep track of viewers who watched the video via another site.

You should finally understand the complexities surrounding video marketing and the various approaches that successful companies use to meet their goals. Most people are realizing traditional marketing is failing. It?s a digital world, so maintaining your online presence is imperative. Follow the advice from this article to help your business be profitable.

TIP! Video marketing can be used for promoting new products to customers. This is a good way to give people an idea of what your product looks like and your video can also function as a user manual.

GOP continues to slam new Obama war approach

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans keep slamming President Barack Obama's push to move the government away from a war footing and refine and recalibrate counterterrorism strategy.

Capitol Hill Republicans like Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina say Obama is projecting weakness at a time when the United States needs to show resolve against terror networks like al-Qaida.

The South Carolina Republican said Sunday that "at a time when we need resolve the most, we're sounding retreat."

Obama gave a major speech Thursday in which he said al-Qaida is "on the path to defeat" and he's signaling that he's reluctant to commit troops overseas to conflicts like Syria or other countries struggling with instability in the uncertain aftermath of the Arab Spring. He's also modifying policies on the use of unmanned drone aircraft to try to limit civilian casualties and is redoubling his longstanding ? but so far unfulfilled ? promise to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where many terrorism suspects are being held without formal charges.

Obama is trying to recast the image of terrorists from enemy warriors to cowardly thugs and move the United States away a state of perpetual war.

But Graham said Obama is displaying a "lack of resolve" despite a slew of concerns in the Middle East, including civil war and chemical weapons in Syria and threats to Israel from Syria's unrest and Iran's nuclear program.

"We show this lack of resolve, talking about the war being over," Graham said. "What do you think the Iranians are thinking? At the end of the day, this is the most tone-deaf president I ever could imagine."

"I see a big difference between the president saying the war's at an end and whether or not you've won the war," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla. "We can claim that it's at an end, but this war's going to continue. And we have still tremendous threats out there, that are building, not declining, building, and to not recognize that, I think, is dangerous in the long run and dangerous for the world."

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., defended the president, reprising Obama's theme that maintaining a wartime posture runs the risk of compromising U.S. principles.

"If we're constantly thinking of this as a war, we stand a chance of doing things that compromise our freedoms," Durbin said.

Obama ally Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said that "having transparency, having rules and engaging other activities other than military to help curb the war on terror ? diplomacy, economic sanctions and things like that ? is going to be useful as well. So I think the president did a very, very smart pivot, realizing we're not going to let up on terrorists, but at the same time we're going to meet the changes in the world."

Graham and Durbin spoke on "Fox News Sunday." Schumer and Coburn spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Auto Insurance, What Every Driver Needs. | Insurance Auto

Every driver needs to have insurance. Do you know how to find out the kind and amount of insurance you need? It is easy to get frustrated as you try to consider all of your options for auto insurance. However, there is no reason to feel intimidated. These tips will help you to learn the ins and outs of auto insurance.

Get quotes from a variety of insurance companies before purchasing a policy. Each company uses a different formula, based on your answers to their questions and previous driving records, to figure out what your insurance premium is. By shopping around, you can really save money.

To cut down on your monthly insurance bill, try cutting back on the amount of miles you drive each year. People who drive less typically enjoy lower rates from their auto insurance companies.

Keep your driving record as clean as possible. When accidents and tickets are on your driving record, your insurance costs can go through the roof. If you can?t avoid these things, try lowering your rates and cleaning your record through traffic school.

Learn about the range of coverages before you choose auto insurance. There are many different situations that come into play when determining the cost of insurance. If you cause an accident that results in the death or bodily injury of another person, bodily injury liability insurance will protect you financially.

When purchasing auto insurance for a teenage son or daughter, be sure to compare the cost of adding your child to the policy you have currently and purchasing a separate policy. It can sometimes be cheaper to purchase a different policy, but this depends on what vehicles are involved.

Liability insurance is required in many states for those who operate motor vehicles. As a citizen, it is your responsibility to be aware of your state?s auto insurance requirements, and to maintain a policy that meets or exceeds the minimum levels of coverage mandated by your state. Getting in an accident and not having adequate insurance coverage can have major financial consequences, and it can also be a violation of law.

Ask your auto insurance agent for a list of discounts offered by his company. Look at each discount to find any that apply to you so you can be sure to save money as much as possible.

You can pay less for auto insurance if you subscribe to a bundle insurance. Shop around to see what bundled insurance packages are available to you. Find out what deals are available for obtaining car, home and life insurance together. A bundled insurance package does not always offer the best coverage and you should be sure to select plans that offer you a good price for good coverage for both your home and car.

These are just a few of the many ways that you can understand more about choosing auto insurance. As you learn more about insurance, it becomes easier to understand. Once you fully understand all the ins and outs of insurance, you will be better prepared to determine your own needs.

Google Play no longer able to pay Argentine Android devs

Google Play

Google to stop accepting payments for Argentine developers from June 27, apps to be pulled from July 27.

Android developers based in Argentine have received notice from Google that it'll no longer be able to accept payments for them from June 27. A letter from Google to devs, obtained by South American phone site Celularis, indicates that the changes apply to both paid apps and in-app purchases. The Verge points out that the change is likely due to tough new restrictions on currency exchanges recently imposed by the Argentine government. But Celularis notes that despite the changes to Google Play, Google AdSense for mobile continues to operate in the country.

The letter from Google states that it'll stop accepting payments on behalf of Argentine developers from June 27. Paid apps and in-app items from these devs will be pulled a month later, starting July 27, following final payments on July 22. One solution for Argentina-based app developers is to move their account to another country where they're able to legally do business, an option Google itself suggests in its email to developers.

Google states that it hopes to restore payouts to developers based in Argentina in the future, but that "no specific plans are in place at the moment."

New York claims more proof of bank mortgage abuses

By Karen Freifeld

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said there is mounting evidence that Bank of America Corp , Wells Fargo and Co and other banks violated the terms of a settlement designed to end mortgage servicing abuses.

Schneiderman - who has said he plans to sue Bank of America and Wells Fargo for failing to live up to their obligations under the deal - said other states had found similar problems.

"Several other states have identified similar recurring deficiencies by the participating servicers," Schneiderman said in a letter dated May 23 to the monitor for the settlement, former North Carolina Banking Commissioner Joseph Smith. The letter was obtained by Reuters on Friday.

The $25 billion settlement was brokered last year between five banks and 49 state attorneys general. The other banks are JPMorgan Chase & Co , Citigroup Inc , and Ally Financial Inc . The banks agreed to provide relief to homeowners and comply with a set of servicing standards to atone for foreclosure misconduct.

In his letter, Schneiderman did not identify which other states had provided evidence of banks failing to abide by the settlement. Nor did he identify the banks with recurring deficiencies.

He said receipt of his letter to Smith and a concurrent one to a monitoring committee would start the clock on a waiting period before lawsuits could be filed against the banks. The settlement authorizes the monitor to first work with a mortgage servicer to correct any potential violations and sue if the servicer does not fix the errors.

Schneiderman said on May 6 he planned to sue Bank of America and Wells Fargo after the waiting period was over, although he did not mention the possibility of a lawsuit in Thursday's letter.

At the time, Schneiderman said that, since last October, his office had documented 339 violations of standards - 210 by Wells Fargo and 129 by Bank of America - dictating the timeline for banks to process mortgage modification applications.

In Thursday's letter, Schneiderman said the violations reveal the two banks "are engaging in much of the same misconduct that precipitated the National Mortgage Settlement."

Smith said in a statement Friday he would review the violations Schneiderman shared. He also said he will issue a report on the banks' compliance in June. "I intend to use the full breadth of my power under the settlement to hold the banks accountable," he said.

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, who is on the monitoring committee, said in a conference call on Tuesday that some banks have "fallen short" of complying with servicing standards. He did not name any banks.

In Thursday's letter, Schneiderman said there had been "inordinate delays" in reviewing loan modification applications at Wells Fargo, so applicants had to resubmit documents.

He cited evidence of piecemeal requests for additional documents in one modification application at Bank of America, and said more than three months passed without a request for more information or a decision on another application.

Bank of America has said it did not commit any violations, and that it has provided more relief under the settlement than any other servicer. Wells Fargo has said it was committed to abiding by the settlement.

Citibank said on Friday it remains committed to fulfilling the terms of the settlement. JPMorgan spokesman Tom Kelly declined to comment. Ally said its bankrupt mortgage subsidiary Residential Capital is responsible for the settlement. A spokesperson for ResCap could not immediately be reached for comment.

On Tuesday, Smith reported that the five banks in the settlement had distributed $50 billion in direct relief to over 620,000 homeowners as part of the settlement.

Snooki: NJ Gov Christie 'just doesn't like us'

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was never a fan of MTV's "Jersey Shore," saying it unfairly cast the state in a negative light.

So when Nicole Polizzi, otherwise known as Snooki, got to meet the governor Friday and shake his hand, their exchange was a bit awkward.

Christie and "Jersey Shore" cast members appeared separately on NBC's "Today" show during filming in Seaside Heights, N.J., to talk about the state's recovery from Superstorm Sandy. Seaside is where "Jersey Shore" was filmed.

In a later exchange captured on video by the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/ZiTFCx ), an unsmiling Snooki told Christie that she hoped he would "start to like us."

Christie responded, "Well, we'll do our best."

After they parted ways, Snooki looked at the camera and said, "He just doesn't like us."

Ally settlement may be a boon for ResCap bondholders

By Nick Brown

NEW YORK (Reuters) - While bond insurers MBIA Inc and FGIC Corp receive the lion's share of Ally Financial Inc's $2.1 billion contribution to the debts of mortgage lender Residential Capital LLC, hedge funds like Paulson & Co may have obtained a better deal.

Under an agreement made public on Thursday, MBIA and FGIC, which insured residential mortgage-backed securities issued by ResCap, get about $1 billion - a bigger share of the total pot than they would have received in an earlier version of the settlement. Other bond insurers get a total of $96 million.

But the insurers have had to pay billions of dollars in claims stemming from the failed securities - MBIA alone has already paid out more than $2 billion - and may have to pay more in the future.

Paulson and other holders of ResCap's unsecured notes, on the other hand, may have made a profit. The noteholders will receive $351 million or so, about 35 cents on the dollar for their roughly $1 billion in claims.

While Paulson has not disclosed what it paid for its stake, it is likely making a profit. The bonds were trading lower than 30 cents on the dollar last May, when ResCap filed for bankruptcy, according to bond tracking program TRACE. They dipped to 24 cents at the beginning of this year, but have since risen to about 34 cents, TRACE shows.

Ally Financial said on Thursday it would pay $2.1 billion to creditors of ResCap, its bankrupt mortgage unit, up from the $750 million it had previously offered to settle the same claims against it.

ResCap estimates it will now have about $2.5 billion to pay to unsecured creditors - the contribution from Ally plus another $400 million or so from the proceeds of unliquidated assets.

The agreement was filed in bankruptcy court in New York and is subject to court approval. Under the agreement, MBIA will receive about $800 million and FGIC will get $206.5 million.

Paulson is the largest holder of ResCap's unsecured bonds. Dan Kamensky, a partner at Paulson, did not return a call on Thursday. In a statement, Kamensky said "we are supportive of the settlement that allows Ally to move forward as a leading automotive financial services company."

Holders of residential mortgage-backed securities - of which there are more than 40,000 among 392 separate RMBS trusts - will recoup about $672 million.

The settlement also resolves ongoing litigation, including a securities class action led by the New Jersey Carpenters Health Fund, which will receive $100 million. A trust created for the benefit of other private securities claimants will receive $226 million.

Russia says Syrian regime agrees to peace talks

BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian government has agreed to attend a conference proposed by Russia and the United States on ending the country's civil war, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday, the first sign that President Bashar Assad's regime would be willing to take part in the talks with the opposition.

Assad's government has not issued a definitive statement of its own on the proposed talks, but a Syrian legislator in Damascus also said the government intends to attend.

Russia and the U.S. joined efforts to convene an international conference to bring representatives of Assad's regime and the opposition to the negotiating table, expected to be held in Geneva next month. The aim of the talks would be to establish the outlines of a transitional government as a way to end the civil war, now in its third year.

More than 70,000 people have been killed and several million displaced since the uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011.

The diplomatic push comes as the rebels have suffered a string of setbacks and found themselves forced to call in reinforcements to fight off a weeklong regime offensive aimed at recapturing the key western Syrian town of Qusair.

The main opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, has not yet said whether it will attend the Geneva conference and is currently discussing its position at a gathering in the Turkish city of Istanbul. But members have said they want guarantees that Assad's departure is foremost on the agenda of any talks.

The U.S.-Russia plan, similar to the one set out last year in Geneva, calls for talks on a transitional government and an open-ended cease-fire. Washington, along with key European and Arab supporters of Syria's opposition, said Wednesday that Assad must relinquish power at the start of a transition period. Russia, however, has not committed to Assad's departure and the Syrian leader has said he will not step down before his term ends next year.

Moscow's announcement came after days of talks there between Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faysal Mekdad and Russian officials.

"We note with satisfaction that we have received an agreement in principle from the Syrian government in Damascus to participate in the international conference, in the interest of Syrians themselves, to find a political solution," Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in televised remarks.

But he said it is impossible to set the date for the conference at this point because there is "no clarity about who will speak on behalf of the opposition and what powers they will have."

Lukashevich also said Moscow "was not encouraged" by the results of recent meetings of members of the Syrian National Coalition.

U.S. officials announced later Friday that Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov next week in Paris to discuss the Syria peace talks, adding that Kerry will extend a seven-day trip through the Middle East and Africa by one day to dine Monday with Lavrov.

In the Syrian capital, legislator Sharif Shehadeh confirmed the government intends to attend, though no official statement has been issued yet. "The expectations and the opinion within the Syrian leadership is that it will most definitely attend the conference," Shehadeh told The Associated Press.

He said neither the opposition nor the regime should set preconditions for the talks because that would lead to "failure and this is something Russia is making clear to the opposition."

"The success of the conference lies with the opposition, not the government," he said.

At the Syrian National Coalition's three-day gathering in Istanbul that began Thursday, an opposition figure expressed doubts over Moscow's announcement, questioning why the regime has said nothing about it.

"We are very supportive of the (U.S.-Russian) initiative. Our fear is that the regime is not going to negotiate in good faith. We would like to hear enough (from Damascus) to know that they are serious about these negotiations," Louay Safi said.

Kerry has acknowledged the difficulties of launching peace talks. "Nobody has any illusions about how difficult, complicated, what a steep climb that is," he said Thursday during a visit to Israel.

Intense fighting, meanwhile, continued in Qusair, near the border with Lebanon, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Government forces have been trying to recapture the town since Sunday. State-run news agency SANA said troops killed a "large number" of rebels in the latest clashes.

The Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen TV, which has several reporters embedded with Syrian troops in Qusair, said government forces were advancing inside the nearby town of Hamdiyeh in an attempt to cut the rebels' last supply line.

Syrian state media also reported that rebels fired mortar shells at the central prison in the embattled northern city of Aleppo, killing and wounding several inmates.

The pro-opposition Aleppo Media Center said rebels and government troops were clashing at the prison, where a large fire had broken out. State-TV reported later Friday that troops repelled the attack on the jail and killed several gunmen.

State-run news agency SANA said the army destroyed two trucks loaded with explosives near the central prison and killed scores of "terrorists."

A week earlier, Assad's forces repelled a rebel raid on the prison aiming to free hundreds of political prisoners.

In other violence, a suicide bomber detonated his car packed with explosives on the outskirts of the northern city of Idlib, killing five people and wounding 10, SANA reported. It did not identify the target of the attack.

In neighboring Lebanon, Lebanese supporters and opponents of Assad fought overnight in the port city of Tripoli, a port city that has seen some of the worst fighting in years provoked by the bloodshed in Syria. Security officials said the death toll since Sunday reached 25, including three soldiers.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said 200 people were wounded in the fighting. The city was quiet during the day Friday apart from sporadic shooting.

Oklahoma tornado was stronger than Hiroshima bomb: How?

When the conditions are exactly right ??and they were, for the tornado that devastated Oklahoma City yesterday ??a tornado can unleash more power than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

By Seth Borenstein,?Associated Press / May 21, 2013

Left, a neighborhood in Moore, Okla., left in ruins on May 4, 1999, after a tornado flattened many houses and buildings in central Oklahoma. Right, flattened houses in Moore on May 20, 2013. Monday's powerful tornado in suburban Oklahoma City loosely followed the path of a killer twister that slammed the region in May 1999.

AP Photo

Everything had to come together just perfectly to create the killer?tornado?in Moore, Okla.: wind speed, moisture in the air, temperature and timing. And when they did, the awesome energy released over that city dwarfed the power of the atomic bomb that leveled Hiroshima.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service gave it the top-of-the-scale rating of EF5 for wind speed and breadth, and severity of damage. Wind speeds were estimated at between 200 and 210 mph. The death count is 24 so far, including at least nine children. The United States averages about one EF5 a year, but this was the first in nearly two years.

To get such an uncommon storm to form is "a bit of a Goldilocks problem," said Pennsylvania State University meteorology professor Paul Markowski. "Everything has to be just right."

For example, there must be humidity for a?tornado?to form, but too much can cut the storm off. The same goes with the cold air in a downdraft: Too much can be a storm-killer.

But when the ideal conditions do occur, watch out. The power of nature beats out anything man can create.

"Everything was ready for explosive development yesterday," said Colorado State University meteorology professor Russ Schumacher, who was in Oklahoma launching airborne devices that measured the energy, moisture and wind speeds on Monday. "It all just unleashed on that one area."

Several meteorologists contacted by The Associated Press used real time measurements, some made by Schumacher, to calculate the energy released during the storm's 40-minute life span. Their estimates ranged from 8 times to more than 600 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb, with more experts at the high end. Their calculations were based on energy measured in the air and then multiplied over the size and duration of the storm.

An EF5?tornado?has the most violent winds on Earth, more powerful than a hurricane. The strongest winds ever measured were the 302 mph reading, measured by radar, during the EF5?tornado?that struck Moore on May 3, 1999, according to Jeff Masters, meteorology director at the Weather Underground.

Still, when it comes to weather events, scientists usually know more about and can better predict hurricanes, winter storms, heat waves and other big events.

LeAnn Rimes asks daily forgiveness for cheating

Celebs

Most people get to keep their marital mistakes private, but not country singer LeAnn Rimes. National magazines wrote about the tangled end of the singer's first marriage, and now Rimes tells "Entertainment Tonight" she asks for forgiveness "on a daily basis" for breaking her marriage vows.

Rimes wed backup dancer Dean Sheremet in 2002, and in 2009, cheated on him with actor Eddie Cibrian, who was himself married to reality-show personality Brandi Glanville at the time. Cibrian and Rimes wed in 2011.

She knows she did wrong, Rimes said. "I've definitely asked for forgiveness on a daily basis,"she told ET's Nancy O'Dell on Wednesday. "We are human beings who are going to sin and make mistakes."

Coming to grips with the affair is a topic of some of the songs on her new album "Spitfire," which comes out June 4. In one song, Rimes sings plaintively, "Oh, what have I done?"

She says she hopes her music will set the record straight about her actions. "I feel like so many people have written the story that they think will sell a magazine, or the story that they want to believe, but it's so 180 of what has been written," she told O'Dell. "People have had the lies to twist for so long they might as well have the truth to twist now."

The new song "You've Ruined Me" is about Cibrian, and includes the lyrics, "Guess my hands are tied here/How far do you want to take this/If my mouth's done too much talking/You should stop me with your kiss."

"You meet someone that is all of those things that you would love to have in a relationship," she said while explaining the song to O'Dell. "And so to go anywhere from that moment and that relationship and that love is just ... you've ruined me forever."

Evan Peters Joins X-Men: Days of Future Past

While The Avengers 2 isn't due in theaters until May 2015, Joss Whedon recently admitted that he'd be adding two important characters to the mix, siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, who both come with a very interesting history. Because they're part of the X-Men universe and the Avengers universe, Disney/Marvel and 20th Century Fox both have the rights to use them in any of their movies. Though we don't know how they're being used in The Avengers 2, we gather it'll be in a major capacity (possibly as villains), and that Saoirse Ronan is on the wishlist to play Scarlet Witch.

That may have all changed this afternoon, however, as X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer busted out a big announcement via Twitter, revealing that Kick-Ass actor Evan Peters has been cast as Quicksilver in his X-Men sequel, due out on July 18, 2014, less than a year before the character would appear in The Avengers 2. Did Fox simply write the character into their script in order to make things difficult for Marvel, or could Quicksilver's appearance in Days of Future Past actually help The Avengers 2 by introducing the origin story for a pivotal new Avengers character, thereby making him an easier sell by the time Marvel's monster sequel comes to town?

?

?
Based on the way Singer phrases his tweet -- and that Evan Peters is in his mid-20s -- we imagine they'll be using a younger Quicksilver in the X-Men sequel, leaving enough room for Marvel to use an older version of the same character in The Avengers 2. If it seems confusing, know that no matter what happens behind the scenes, this is definitely a cool thing for fans in that there's potential to see a single character used in two major franchises from different studios. Quicksilver's father is none other than Magneto, and if we see his origin story in Days of Future Past, then reunite with an older version of the character in The Avengers 2, all that does is allow fans to have a more complete big-screen experience with a character versus seeing only part of his history.

Of course there's also the small chance both studios are conspiring together and working toward an even bigger crossover down the line, testing the waters with one character before building something larger. That would be pretty amazing, and also pretty unbelievable considering the amount of legal hoops each party would need to jump through first.?

Should be fascinating to see what Marvel does now. We hope they stick to their plan, because assuming Fox does right by Quicksilver, it'll just make fans that much hungrier to see him appear on screen again in The Avengers 2.

What do you think?

Air-Powered Force Feedback Could Make Kinect Even More Immersive

Microsoft's Kinect provided gamers with a hands-free way to play their favorite titles. But when the controller was removed from the situation, so was the haptic force feedback that can enhance gameplay. Most of us were ok with the tradeoff, but not the Imagineers at Disney Research who've come up with a way to provide tactile force feedback using nothing but targeted puffs of air.

Mega genomes of spruce species decoded

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Canadian and Swedish scientists today released genome sequences of two of the most economically important forest trees in the world.

Conifers supply raw materials for the Canadian forestry industry, which accounted for $23.7 billion in Canada's economy in 2011. Gross output of the forest sector in Sweden in 2009 was $29.7 billion.

At 20-30 billion base-pairs and up to 10 times larger than the human genome, the white spruce genome, published in Bioinformatics, and the Norway spruce genome, published in Nature, are also the largest genome sequence assemblies to date.

"Attempting the sequencing of such a large genome was an incredibly ambitious task and required the development of novel software and innovative use of DNA sequence technology to piece together short DNA sequences to form this massive genome, much like a large jigsaw puzzle," says Prof. Steven Jones, senior author of the white spruce genome study.

Jones is Head of Bioinformatics at the BC Cancer Agency Genome Sciences Centre (GSC) and a professor at both the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver.

"Many projects are now attempting to decipher genomes of economically important plants," says Inanc Birol, lead scientist of the white spruce genome assembly. "We demonstrated a superior and less expensive method to do the job." Birol is a scientist with BC Cancer Agency's GSC and a professor with both UBC and SFU.

"These genome sequences allow us to develop innovative tools for tree breeding, addressing economically and ecologically important targets such as insect resistance, wood quality, growth rates and adaptation to changing climate" says UBC Prof. Joerg Bohlmann, a co-author of both studies.

"A genome-based marker system could serve to reduce the time of a spruce breeding cycle from currently 25 to as short as five years, and will contribute directly to the competitiveness of the Canadian and Scandinavian forest industry," says Prof. John MacKay of Universit? Laval, a co-author of both studies.

About the studies

The Bioinformatics study focusing on the White spruce genome was part of the SMarTForests Project (http://www.smartforests.ca) and involved researchers from the Genome Sciences Centre at BC Cancer Agency, the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Universit? Laval and the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. The study was funded by Genome Canada, Genome British Columbia, and Genome Quebec.

The Nature study decoding the Norway spruce genome was lead by scientists in Sweden and involved Canadian researchers, including Joerg Bohlmann from UBC's Michael Smith Laboratories and John MacKay from Universit? Laval. Bohlmann and MacKay are the Project Leaders of the SMarTForests Project, which is developing marker systems for tree breeding. They were funded by Genome Canada, Genome British Columbia, and Genome Quebec.

High School Pitcher Tosses 66-Pitch Perfect Game In California

It only took Michael Strem 66 pitches to achieve a perfect game.

According to Mercury News, Strem threw a 66-pitch perfect game this weekend to lead St. Francis High School over Monta Vista during the first game of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs in California.

It was the first perfect game in St. Francis history.

Strem told Prep 2 Prep: ?It?s a pretty amazing, special day that I?ll remember for the rest of my life ? I had all four pitches working today. I was getting ahead early so I was able to keep my pitch count down.?

Strem threw 66-pitches, 48 of which were strikes, and struck out eight batters during his perfect game. For anyone doing the math at home, that?s about three pitchers per batter.

Despite Strem?s 66-pitch perfect game, the St. Francis Lancers were only able to take the victory by 2 runs. Monta Vista pitcher Peter Stern was able to hold the Lancers scoreless through the first six-innings but he would end up allowing three hits and two runs before the game was over.

Strem, who has committed to Boston College next year, added: ?It definitely helped that the game was close because I couldn?t lose focus at all ? And this being a CCS game, we knew that tomorrow wasn?t guaranteed so we had to step up as a team. The important thing was to get the win.?

St. Francis improved to 26-4 as they advance in the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs.

Get which users the request was sent to Facebook Android

I'm trying to create a application were you can "invite" or tell your friends about it through the Facebook request dialog. https://developers.facebook.com/docs/howtos/androidsdk/3.0/send-requests/

It works somewhat but one thing I need is to know who the requests were sent TO. How can I do this?

I also have a secondary issue where the request notification only shows up on the users app - not on the desktop page. Anyone know anything about that?

Request code:

private void sendRequestDialog() {         Bundle params = new Bundle();         params.putString("message", "!");          WebDialog requestsDialog = (             new WebDialog.RequestsDialogBuilder(MyPage.this, Session.getActiveSession(), params))                 .setOnCompleteListener(new OnCompleteListener() {                      @Override                     public void onComplete(Bundle values, FacebookException error) {                         if (error != null) {                             if (error instanceof FacebookOperationCanceledException) {                                 Toast.makeText(MyPage.this,                                      "Inbjudan avbruten",                                      Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();                             } else {                                 Toast.makeText(MyPage.this, "N?tverksfel, kontrollera din anslutning och f?rs?k igen", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();                             }                         } else {                             final String requestId = values.getString("request");                             if (requestId != null) {                                 Toast.makeText(MyPage.this, "Inbjudan skickad", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();                             } else {                                 Toast.makeText(MyPage.this, "Inbjudan avbruten", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();                             }                         }                        }                    })                 .build();         requestsDialog.show();     }

Hair dyes, perming, straightening with much chemical ingredients often damage our hair. In resultant; dry and dull looking hair.

But yet to meet any near to perfect.

Recently I was introduced to Shiseido Aquair Deep Moist Shampoo & Conditioner. I hope this new haircare from Shiseido able to restore my hair. Although its not really that serious yet, but I do not wish to spend big bucks doing treatments in a hair saloon.

AquaAirShampoo is milky and slightly runny. While the conditioner is rich and creamy.

Shampoo wet hair and softly massage through hair and scalp. Leave in for 5 minutes if possible, to help hair absorb healing ingredients. Rinse with warm water. Follow with Conditioner. Apply conditioner on semi toweled dry hair, emphasize on hair ends. Then leave for at least 3 minutes before final rinse.

The smell of both shampoo and conditioner are not strong. You don?t feel the smell when you hair is damp. But after drying it..you?ll smell this mild, clean and pleasant scent.

AquaAir1Before : Frizzy, dry hair ends and untamed hair.

AquaAir2After several washes?.it does show a difference here. Shinier, moisture, manageable and not as frizzy as before even without applying any hair serum. Hair tangling has reduced by 50%. Do I look like I?m having a healthier hair now?

2013-05-22 08.21.01

Verdict : Its slightly more expensive than my previous shampoos and conditioners but still consider an affordable pricing. Most important is that I?ve found a better haircare, witnessing positive improvements on my hair. A healthier hair a healthier me! ^_^

Daft Punkitecture Around The World

Daft Punk recently released this slick and stylish photo shoot set in a famous LA modernist house, though we here at Architizer think there?s more here than meets the eye. What other ?Daft Punkitecture? is out there in the world waiting to be found?

These images were shot at the Sheats Goldstein Residence, designed by American modernist architect John Lautner in the early 1960s. It?s a perfect fit for the group?s aesthetic: a little disco, a little futuristic, and certainly super cool. Read more here.
